Every child recognizes his light white beard and his rosy cheeks. The jolly man with his portly body. Those round glasses. The big black belt and boots. The red hat with a white ball on the tip. This is the man in the red suit. Or best known as Santa Claus. When I was younger I loved Santa. Every Christmas, I would be excited and happy. I couldn’t wait for him to come. Now as I’m older and now more about the jolly man in the red suit, Christmas isn’t the same. I still love Christmas and Santa’s coming, but there is a feeling like the Christmas magic is gone. I’m talking about the mystery of Santa. How he can go all around the world to every kid’s house delivering presents. How he has hundreds of elves that make exactly what we ask for and more. I remember one time when I was younger and I saw Santa Claus. I was so excited, but I was also afraid. About five years ago on Christmas Eve, I was soundly asleep in my bed. All of a sudden, my parents were frantically waking me. They said that Santa was in our house. I jumped out of bed as fast as someone who was half asleep could. I walked down the hallway and looked out over the balcony to the living room. There he was putting gifts down for my brothers, my sister, and me. I was so excited to see him that I wanted to go down there and talk to him. However my fear of someone being in my house and my sleepiness took over and I stayed where I was. I must have been pretty tired because he just seemed to disappear. I will never forget that night. All kids love Santa. Who wouldn’t like a guy that gives you presents every year? Santa also helped kids act nicer and kinder. They know that Santa will only give presents to the good boys and girls and not to those that have been naughty. As a result, kids try to act extremely nice right before Christmas so Santa will bring them presents. People call Santa by many different names. In the Unites States he is called Saint Nicholas, Saint Nick, Father Christmas, Santa, Santa Claus, and Kris Kringle. In Brazil he is called Papai Natal. In Chile he is called Viejo Pascuero. In China he is called Dun Che Lao Ren. He is called Julemanden in Denmark. Joulupukki is what he is called in Finland. In Germany he is called Weinachtsmann. In Hungary he is called Mikulas. Babbo Natale is what people in Italy call him. Hoteiosho is what he is called in Japan. People in Norway call him Julenissen. In Portugal he is called Pai Natal. Papa Noel is what people in Spain call him. In Romania he is called Mos Craciun. He is called Ded Moroz in Russia. In Turkey he is called Noel Baba. As you can see Santa has many different names. The Masked Chase
There we were running down a half-mile long lobby in a cruise ship. Getting chased by security guards. Waitresses throwing food in the air. People screaming. And where was Domenic? Was he caught? Would he get kicked off the boat?
You’re probably wondering how I got into this mess. Well it all started last year on Spring break. My family decided to go on a cruise to Mexico with my cousins. Their names are Kevin and Tony. Tony is two years older than Kevin. We were having a lot of fun, but by the end of the week we wanted to do something crazy.
In San Carlos, my brother, Domenic, and I got Mexican wrestling masks. We thought they were so cool. We showed Kevin and Tony them, and they also thought the masks were nifty. Then we got back on the boat.
The next day we were a little bored. We couldn’t think of what to do because we had already done it all. Then Tony came up with an idea. He wanted Domenic and I to wear the Mexican masks and chase him around the main lobby of the boat. This lobby is half a mile long and has plenty of stores and restaurants on both sides. It almost looked more like a huge hallway. There is not a point in the day when the lobby was not packed full of people. At first I kind of rejected the idea. I mean come on. We could have gotten into a lot of trouble. But after a while of thinking and my cousins nagging me to say yes I finally agreed.
Our plan was to have Kevin and my other siblings, Antonio and Kayla, sit at a table in the lobby so they could watch what we were doing. Next, Tony was going to come running down the lobby as fast as he could and making it seem like he was running away from someone. Domenic and I would come next pretending like we were trying to catch him. We did not thoroughly think through the plan because we did not know when to stop and where exactly to go. But it was too late.
Tony, Kevin, Domenic, and I shared a room with no parents so everyone met in our room. Tony, Domenic, and I let the rest leave. About twenty minutes later they called us and told us that they were ready. So we put on the clothes we decided to wear for the chase and got out masks. We hid in the masks in out jackets so nobody would see us with them until we got to the lobby. We walked down they hallway and then into the elevator. Domenic and I put our masks on. I could feel the anxiety whelming up inside me. Did I really want to do this? How much trouble would I get in if I was caught? But it was too late. The elevator door opened and the chase began.
